Why NEET is Essential for Indian Students Planning MBBS Abroad
For decades, the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) has been the sole gateway for medical aspirants in India. While most students know that NEET is required for admission to Indian medical colleges, many are still unclear about the importance of NEET to study MBBS abroad. At Professional Career Academy, we strongly emphasise that NEET qualification is no longer optional – it is a mandatory requirement set by the National Medical Commission (NMC) for any Indian student who wishes to pursue an MBBS degree in a foreign country and later practise in India.
This article explains why NEET is compulsory, what happens if you join a foreign medical university without NEET, and how Professional Career Academy helps you navigate these regulations.
Why NEET is Mandatory for MBBS Abroad (in addition to 50% marks in PCB)
A few years ago, the NMC (then MCI) made NEET qualification compulsory for every Indian student seeking admission to any foreign medical institution. This means that NEET is now a part of the basic eligibility criteria – just like 50% marks in 12th (PCB) or completing 17 years of age. As a result, most reputed medical universities abroad no longer accept Indian students without a valid NEET score. The few that do will not be recognised by the NMC, and the student will be barred from practising in India.
Therefore, the first and most important reason to take NEET seriously is: “NEET is important to study MBBS abroad because it has become a mandatory eligibility requirement – without it, you cannot obtain an NMC‑recognised degree.” Professional Career Academy strictly advises all aspirants to first qualify NEET before applying for MBBS abroad.
What Happens If You Join a Foreign Medical College Without NEET Qualification?
In the past, some students opted to join medical colleges abroad without qualifying NEET, assuming they never wanted to practise in India. However, such decisions carry serious long‑term consequences. The NMC has clearly stated that students who pursue MBBS abroad without NEET will NOT be allowed to appear for the FMGE / NExT examination, and hence will never obtain a medical license in India. This completely closes the door to practicing medicine in India.
For students who have firm plans to settle and work permanently in the country where they study, there may be a few universities that accept non‑NEET candidates. However, even in such cases, the student is required to submit a sworn affidavit in India declaring that they fully understand the NMC rules and will never seek registration in India. Professional Career Academy strongly discourages this path, as it limits future flexibility and career options.
Our advice to every MBBS aspirant is clear: NEET is not just an exam – it is the foundation of your medical career, whether in India or abroad. Prepare well, qualify NEET, and then let us help you choose the best international university that meets NMC standards.
